Is social media really media?

Amy Jo Martin (@AmyJoMartin), author of “Renegades Write the Rules” and CEO of Digital Royalty shares a few social media tips with The Daily’s Kyle Stock in the below video.
I was struck that Martin believes ‘social media’ has been misnamed. She doesn’t believe it’s media at all.
Martin sees social media as communication – more like the telephone and less like the TV. She sees it as a dialogue more than a monologue.
When looking to dip your toe into social media, Martin says the first step is listening.
- Listen to who you want to connect with.
- Listen to the conversations you want to be a part of.
Only after listening will you be able to integrate into the conversations as opposed to interupt them.
