LinkedIn Legal Blogging Group at 3,900 members and counting

My Legal Blogging Group at LinkedIn has grown to nearly 4,000 members.

Amazing when you realize that I had no idea what I was doing when I started the group two years ago this month. I thought it would be a good idea to connect legal professionals who had an interest in blogging. With LinkedIn being the leading professional social networking site, it seemed the logical thing to do. I invited one person at LexBlog to join and within weeks we had a couple hundred members.

If you stop by the group’s page on LinkedIn, you’ll see how to join, and find the following description of our group which has grown to cover all social media.

Social media is proving an effective means of professional and business development for lawyers, law firms, and other legal professionals. But when it comes to blogs, Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, and what have you, there’s more questions than answers.

This group provides legal professionals, and those serving the profession, an opportunity to meet others and share information on the use of social media – to benefit each other, our profession, and the public we serve.

It’s been a joy to meet and greet legal professionals from all over the world who apply to join the group. It may be nuts with 50 or 60 new applicants a week, but I take a look the profile of each applicant and drop them a personal note welcoming them to the group. It seems like the polite thing to do and how else could I meet so many fine people.

I do my best to delete irrelevant and spam discussion threads and shared news. Going forward I’ll start promoting interesting discussion among the group on Twitter and on my blog. Already some blog posts I share with the group generate more commentary than on my blog itself. I guess that’s part of ‘going out’ and engaging people where they already are.

If you’re not a member, stop by and join. I’d welcome meeting or reconnecting.
