My wish to all lawyer bloggers c/o Steve Jobs’ commencement address

July 2, 2005

“Stay Hungry. Stay Foolish.” Those were the concluding words of Steve Job’s commencement address at Stanford University last month.

You’ve got to find what you love. Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma – which is living with the results of other people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of other’s opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.

Jobs, head of Apple Computers, pulled the ‘Stay Hungry, Stay Foolish’ phrase from The Whole Earth Catalog, which he called one of the bibles of his generation. Its creator Stewart Brand used those words when he signed off with his last edition.

As lawyers we are apt to follow and feel caged in so as to conform. Perhaps if a few us followed our heart and our dreams we would have a better reputation as a profession.

So you lawyers publishing blogs don’t be trapped by dogma and other people’s thinking. Go for it. Stay Hungry. Stay Foolish.

And no wishful thinking Martindale-Hubbell or FindLaw, this ain’t my last edition. ;)
