Former Apple business executive, Jean-Louis Gassée, shares at Monday Note:

Despite Apple’s effort to strengthen the iPad line by building a dedicated iPadOS operating system, sales have slumped. For the last three months and over the full year, Mac revenue is heading up while iPad sales are falling.

The iPad has a troubled, seesaw history. After a meteoric rise in sales following its 2010 launch, revenue began to decline in 2013.”

The reviews of the this Fall’s update of the iPad have been less than kind. People expected more.

I wonder why people expect bells and whistles all the time.

Effective simplicity, with improved technology below the hood – technology I couldn’t describe or understand – is what I expect from Apple products. Plus, of course, looking cool.

I am not for the “Food Fight” strategy that Gassee discusses of throwing up against the wall various features to see what sticks – to get the iPad more “mac like” in order to see what will sell more iPads.

I use an iPad Pro for all of my work, and have been doing so for the better part of ten years.

I couldn’t imagine blogging or engaging on social media elsewhere. I use an iPhone as well, but only use a “machine,” my iMac, for video calls and conferences.

As a publisher and business leader, the iPad – with its superior apps – serves me well, better than a machine would. My last machine was a MacBook Air.

In that it’s been a couple years since the last iPad update (my last purchase), I was ready to buy the new iPad Pro. But the updates I read about in reviews did not mean much for me (other than a performance boost). So I passed – until now.

The last few weeks my iPad has been occasionally freezing up. First time that’s ever occurred on one of my iPads. I was thinking of doing a few things to try to correct things, but I am far from a tech mechanic – that only leads to frustration and feels like a waste of time.

So I’ll probably head over to the Apple Store this evening and trade in my iPad for the latest model. As much as I am on my iPad – 7 days a week for a good portion of the day – seems a good investment in the tools of the trade.

I kind of hope that despite declining sales, the iPad will as a simple, yet powerful, digital media and business tool.
