Legal Bloggers Stand to Benefit from Musk Acquisition of Twitter

feature-3
October 26, 2022

Legal bloggers stand to gain from Elon Musk’s acquisition of Twitter – at least that’s my take.

And from the looks of things, Musk will own Twitter come Friday when he closes the purchase and meets with the entire Twitter team.

If anyone doubts that Musk will soon own Twitter, here Musk is today entering Twitter headquarters, saying ”Let that sink in.”

Since news of the acquisition broke, mainstream news, and with it social media, have been bashing Musk and warning that Twitter’s best days are over.

  • Musk will no long filter what they believe should be filtered, believe many.
  • From Reuters, Twitter is losing its most active users and turning into a porn-and-crypto fest as “interest in news, sports and entertainment” wanes.
  • From all the major news organizations, Musk is going to immediately lay off 75% of Twitter’s employees, making the Twitter user experience worse than ever.
  • Musk, with a free speech bent, is only going to polarize this country more than it already is.
  • Musk is going to have put up Tesla as security for Twitter loans, only jeopardizing Tesla, itself.

The naysayers skip over Musk’s track record of business success (c/o Wikipedia), something that with Twitter’s business data is attracting big name venture capitalists.

  • Passing on Stanford, Musk co-founded web software company Zip2 which was acquired by Compaq for $307 million in 1999.
  • The same year he co-founded the online bank X.com, which merged with Confinity in 2000 to form PayPaleBay bought PayPal in 2002 for $1.5 billion.
  • In 2002, Musk founded SpaceX, an aerospace manufacturer and space transport services company, and is its CEO and chief engineer.
  • In 2004, he was an early investor in Tesla. He became its chairman and product architect, eventually assuming the position of CEO in 2008. Within the last year, the company’s is market cap exceeds the next 9 biggest automakers combined.
  • In 2006, he helped create SolarCity, a solar energy company that was later acquired by Tesla and became Tesla Energy.
  • In 2015, he co-founded OpenAI, a nonprofit research company promoting friendly artificial intelligence (FAI).
  • In 2016, he co-founded Neuralink, a neurotechnologycompany focused on developing brain–computer interfaces
  • Also in 2016 he founded The Boring Company, a tunnel construction company.
  • Musk is the president of the Musk Foundation, which donates to scientific research and education.

Say what you will, that’s an impressive twenty-three year run.

I still use Twitter – a lot. Legal bloggers looking to effectively network through the net to grow business should probably be doing the same.

Twitter is where I tend to see breaking news – local and national.

I use Twitter lists to engage people and organizations in niche verticals within the legal business. Ensuing relationships and discussion lead to business for our company.

I share news, insight and commentary from others, giving rise to further engagement and business relationships.

I don’t know what dark corner of Twitter major news reporters and the pundits are going into or who they are following, but I am not finding Twitter being run over by porn and crypto freaks. I pay attention to who I associate with. As a legal blogger, you should the same.

As far as Musk, he may look and act different, something that makes many uncomfortable, particularly when the mainstream news, which feels threatened by him, portrays him as such.

But the man has been a tremendous success in most of the things he’s touched – and directed.

I don’t expect Twitter to look much like it does today in two or three years.

Musk has been all over Twitter leadership in the last couple months about their lack of initiative. He even asked them specifically, via Twitter, what they got done in the last week, and two weeks.

I can only guess, without foundation, what changes are coming.

I am confident though that what drew me to Twitter fifteen years ago – news, engagement, relationship nurturing, reputation building and business development is only going to improve.

It wouldn’t surprise me to see Twitter come to challenge Facebook, LinkedIn and other social media – as well as mainstream media for news, information and engagement. All good news for legal bloggers.

Stay tuned, you can expect changes to the Twitter app before the end of the year.
