How to resurrect old blog content on social media (and on your blog)

A lawyer recently asked me about resurrecting some of his older blog content. He wanted to know how he might do so.

He’s been publishing an excellent blog for the last 7 years. His blog is chockfull of insight and commentary of value to business people in his niche – statewide and nationally. His blog has consistently been recognized as one the top 100 by the ABA Journal.

Please share any ideas you have on resurafcing older blog content. Here’s some ideas I thought of as to how to leverage social media.

Twitter was not around when he started blogging, and to a large extent, neither was LinkedIn or Facebook. Back then our blog was how we got out and networked – how we pressed the flesh. Our blog was the sole vehicle that delivered our thoughts.

That’s not true today with social media being the delivery vehicle of choice for much media. In fact, media sites get more traffic from social than search today. Above the Law gets huge views of its content on FaceBook.

Knowing this, why not get your blog’s evergreen content (stands the test of time) out on social.

Share it on Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn. On Twitter space it via Buffer. On LinkedIn I would share in the status update, not in the publisher area, letting folks know why you are sharing the post now. Facebook, assuming you use for a mix of business and personal as I do, share the posts as on LinkedIn.

The focus on this social approach must be to provide value to your audience. The focus cannot be to get traffic/attention to your blog.

At all times you must be thinking I have a lot of archived insight, commentary, and information that would help business owners, professionals, and other lawyers. There’s a lot of your current blog followers/subscribers, if not most of them, who missed many of your golden gems. Focus on value to them.

As I share my ideas, and they are just that, ideas I think could work, I am thinking of doing a little of this social sharing myself. I have 11 years of blog posts.

Veteran law blogger and knowledge management consultant, Connie Crosby (@conniecrosby), believes it’s definitely a good idea to remind everyone of those gems now and then so they don’t just disappear into the mists of time.

Connie shared on Facebook a number of good ideas for doing so right on your blog.

  • Compilations with links back to the original content
  • Listing of posts on specific topics pulled together
  • An updating note with link back to an old post, even quoting the old post
  • Seasonal content could be reposted each year with an update
