Facebook turning mainstream for us old guys?
Yes, I think it is. At least for those of us leading an active Internet life style.
Like a lot of things, I registered at Facebook just to see what it is. I owe that to lawyers and legal marketing professionals seeking my opinion on social networking. Within a day I started receiving emails with links to Facebook asking me to be ‘friends.’ I had no idea how I was getting them but they were from well respected professionals I knew from the legal and Internet marketing industries. They were not college kids.

I’ve been on Facebook about a month now. I have just about 2,000 friends. Almost none of whom are ‘young enough to be in college.’
Do not miss what’s happening to Facebook. It is turning mainstream.
One trend that bloggers don’t want to talk about? A number of my blogging friends have seen their traffic go down lately. They assume that their readers are off in social networks. I think they are absolutely right.
Like anything on the Internet, you need to play with Facebook to get a feel for how it works and how you can use it. I’ve been registered for a few weeks and have 40 friends.
On the HR front, I’ve used Facebook to try to locate potential employees and to do due diligence on the people I have interviewed. I’ve also joined a few networking groups, i.e., Social Media Club and Facebook for business, which have hundreds of business professionals as members.
I do not keep Facebook open on my desktop throughout the day and update my ‘friends’ as to what I am doing – something I see done. I just log in when I receive an invite to connect with someone as a ‘Facebook friend.’ I then check out in the easy to follow interface on my ‘Facebook home page’ recent updates of friends adding friends and friends joining networking groups. That will prompt me to add as a ‘friend’ someone I know that was just added as ‘friend’ by someone already in my network of friends.
Sounds wild I know. But I am 51 and find myself intrigued by Facebook. I know one thing – it sure beats Rotary meetings for networking for me.
