Universal Google Search features ‘blog search’

May 17, 2007

Google’s Universal Search reached everyone’s desktop by this morning. With it came a change in the user interface of Google’s search ‘text field’ (box where users key in search terms) and the ‘featured search options’ available to users that appear below the the ‘text field.’

More interesting is that the ‘featured search options’ vary on your search. It may be that Google is looking at your search to determine if it’s a topic likely to be discussed in blogs. May also be that Google is looking at your search history to determine your preferences.

For example, do a search for ‘Measure 37,’ a hot land use issue in Oregon. Below the Google ‘text field’ you’ll see a link to ‘blogs’ making Google’s Blog Search results one click away.

Interesting that on other searches the one click to ‘blogs’ link does not appear below the search ‘text field.’ Only ‘web’ and ‘news’ does.

While on other searches, only ‘web’ search appears below the search ‘text field.’

Also ‘groups’ was a ‘featured search option’ on another search.

Of course you always could, and still can, click on ‘more’ above the search ‘text field’ to get a drop down menu of all the various Google search options. But having blogs one click away from the millions using Google, is a big plus for bloggers.
