Blogs comprise over 20% of most popular websites : Big edge for blogging lawyers

April 9, 2007

Blogs make up over 20% of the most popular websites, again per David Sifry’s State of the Blogosphere.

And the rate of growth when compared to main stream media (‘MSM’) websites is staggering. 22 blogs were among the top 100 sources linked to in Q4 2006 – up from 12 in the prior quarter.

Blogs continue to become more and more viable news and information outlets. For instance, information not shown in our data but revealed in our own user testing in Q1 2007 indicates that the audience is less and less likely to distinguish a blog from, say, nytimes.com — for a growing base of users, these are all sites for news, information, entertainment, gossip, etc. and not a ‘blog’ or a ‘MSM site’.

What’s this mean for law firms with blogs?

  • Your prospective clients and those who influence them will not differentiate between your blog and MSM websites as sources of news and information.
  • Lawyer blogs will increasingly become ‘go to’ sources of information, insight & news on a niche topic.
  • Lawyer blog posts will be cited increasingly more by other blogs and MSM, further enhancing your reputation as an a niche expert and by virtue of those more incoming links, even better search engine performance for your blog.
