Pinging blog search engines & aggregators
October 20, 2005
Pinging means to send an alert from your blog to a blog aggregation service or blog search engine, letting them know your site has been updated. The aggregators and search engines will then know to come spider your blog site to index the new content.
Blog software such as MoveAble Type allow blog publishers to put in a list of sites to ping. In addition to pinging sites manually, which I advise, it is also possible to ping sites through Web based services that do some of the heavy lifting for you. The best known one is Pingomatic. There is now another in Pingoat, of all names. Using services such as Pingomatic and Pingoat allows blog publishers to ping multiple sites at once.
