London Free Press: Businesses, law firms included, finding blogs useful promtional tool

November 28, 2004

David Canton, an Ontario lawyer with Harrison Pensa, with a practice focusing on technology issues, wrote an excellent article for The London Free Press entitled Businesses finding blogs a useful promotion tool.

Canton explains blogs are no longer perceived as merely a medium where computer savvy techies share their daily thoughts with others with similar interests. Blogs are now viewed as an innovative marketing tool that corporations can use to better service their customer, employee and supplier relations.

Canton does a nice job of highlighting of how businesses are using blogs, the advantages of blogs and the concerns raised by blogging.

How businesses are using blogs

  • Brand or position their products and services.
  • Interact and strengthen relationships with target customer groups.
  • Internally for communication, organization and project collaboration tools.
  • Professionals, including lawyers, to discuss emerging legal issues and developments.

Advantages of blogs

  • Fast, high-tech and low-cost marketing tool.
  • Informal and have a personal element that allows their bloggers to portray a genuine corporate personality to a mass audience.
  • Can be added to a corporate website.
  • For small business – as an attractive, low-cost alternative to having a corporate website.

Legal concerns

  • Liability for defamation
  • Leaking corporate secrets

Nice article David. My guess is that the exposure you received through your own elegal blog opened the door to write this article for The London Free Press. That type of exposure is one of the hidden jewels of lawyer blogs.
