Bloglines, the most popular free Internet service for subscribing, receiving and researching news feeds and blogs, today announced they have 100 million live, dynamic articles now indexed and tracked by their service.

These articles come from hundreds of thousands of unique news sources and blogs. And it’s happened in only a little more than a year. Like I read somewhere else, this means some of those writing blogs ought to take a break and go outside.

But honestly, there is now a wealth of knowledge, yes some very valuable depending on what you are looking for, available to search and subscribe to at a place like Bloglines. Also means for lawyers publishing blogs, your target audience has an easy place to subscribe to your RSS feeds and for net users looking for legal information in your practice area to find you along with your thoughts and analysis.

Bloglines, for those not familiar with it, is a Web site where one can go and subscribe to news feeds and blogs. Blogs, by virtue of their built-in RSS (real simple syndication) feed more news and info than other sources. With Bloglines, there is no software to download or install — simply register as a new user and you can instantly begin accessing your account any time, from any computer or mobile device. And it’s free.

The feeds you susbcribe to can be broken down into folders by topic area. So you could have RSS feeds coming from law blogs you subscribe to for free in one folder and RSS feeds coming from marketing blogs you subscribe to in another folder. You can do a search by topic to see which blogs you lmay wish to subscribe to if you have not already run across them on the Internet.

It may sound like information overload. It’s not. It’s just the opposite. RSS feeds make it very easy to review news and information coming from your favorite sources in a matter of minutes. Try doing that by browsing a Web site or reading email newsletters. That’s info overload.

Frankly doesn’t matter whether you like getting your news and information via RSS feeds. Your clients and prospective clients do or will prefer to do so in the near future. Heck, if most lawyers had to vote, they would prefer not to have Web sites – but clients and the clients they wanted to get made them do so. Same reason law firms will need to be using RSS feeds soon to disseminate the law firm’s marketing communications.

Key Features of Bloglines

  • 100% web service – no software, no downloads, no hassles.
  • Compliant with all feed syndication standards, including RSS and ATOM.
  • Bloglines Notifier available for Microsoft Windows, Mac OS X and Mozilla.
  • Mobile version optimized for handheld computers.
  • Email subscriptions manage e-newsletter traffic.
  • Top Links Directory shows what blogs are getting the most notice.

I do not use Bloglines. I have a very easy to use ‘news aggregator’ that does everything Bloglines does on my laptop (that’s what I use all the time) by the name of Netnewswire (only for Macs). But for those in law firms where IT does not let you just run around downloading and installing new software and for those looking for a Web based platform, Bloglines is great.

Give it a try you lawyers and legal marketing professionals – you may just like it.
