Feedback from answering people’s questions on the Internet is priceless.

Each month tens, if not hundreds, of thousands of lay people ask legal questions on the Internet. Virtually all the questions go unanswered. Lawyers have a golden opportunity to help some of these people and help themselves by answering some questions via the Internet and archiving the questions and answers on the lawyer’s blog or Web site.

Here’s what people told me when I answered their question, not with advice but general information or resources to help get them headed in the right direction.

Thank you for replying to my question. I really did not think I would even get a response. It is very difficult, as I don’t know what field to look into for legal assistances. Some have indicated our problem is civil, some have stated environmental or construction law. I am really not sure and the Attorneys we have called suggest we call another Attorney etc. I again thank you for taking the time to write and also for your suggestions.

What will answering questions and getting positive responses do for you?

• The public thinks so little of us you will distinguish yourself from other lawyers
• Posting the responses on your site shows prospective clients you care
• Ask yourself: “How many law firm sites have posts from people who rave about what they do?”
• Get more content for your site by drawing more questions by email or to a message board on your site
• Some of the questioners will be become clients
• Site users will tell others about your Web site
• Have faith – when you help others without expecting anything in return, the favor will be returned somewhere, sometime and by someone – good work will follow
• You and your staff will have more fun practicing law and find it more fulfilling than ever before – existing clients will rave to others about how enjoyable your firm is to work with
• It’s a wonderful public relations tool. The media, like the public, holds lawyers in low repute. You will stick out from the pack when media looks for a legal resource or for lawyers who are helping people.

It does not take much time to answer a question – perhaps a few minutes. In a week’s time you could answer seven questions in less than a half hour – that’s 25 a month, 300 a year. In little time you will have lots of personable unique content and wonderful responses for your blog or Web site.

Believe me, it brings work.
