Why start a blog? Excellent business journal article

January 7, 2008

Looking for a bulleted list of reasons to begin a blog? Look no further than Lorrie Delk Walker’s piece in this morning’s Polk County Florida Business Journal on why blogging is one of the most important things your business can do.

  • Fresh content.
  • Unlike websites, easy to publish, update and direct toward an audience who wants to see it.
  • Brand yourselves as experts in your field.
  • Provide an element of humanization to your businesse at a time when people are tired of being treated like a number.
  • Streamlines your communication between you and your customers.
  • Provides an avenue for honest feedback allowing you, as a business owner to adapt to customer needs more quickly.
  • Great source for ideas and input.
  • Instead of relying on ideas solely from people in your company, get ideas from infinite amounts of people.
  • High search engine rankings results when people are searching for information on the products and services you sell.

Maybe blogging’s not appropriate for your law firm. ”If you don’t want people’s opinions, then don’t do it,’ says Cat Carter of Lakeland Economic Development Council.

And business blog and social media consultant Josh Hallett says prior to initiating a blog, ask yourself: ‘Is the service or product being sold something interesting and engaging enough to write about or to start conversations about?’

Heck, if you don’t want people’s opinions about your business and aren’t doing something interesting to talk about, you’ve got far greater problems than deciding whether to launch a blog.
