Legal blogger given judicial award for outstanding journalism

Wayne County, Indiana lawyer, Tom Kemp, notes Indiana Law Blog author Marcia Oddi has been give an award by the Indiana Judges Association for outstanding legal journalism.

From the Indiana Courts’ press release:

Marcia J. Oddi, publisher of The Indiana Law Blog, will receive the media award. The Indiana Law Blog is a web log devoted to providing information on Indiana court decisions and other legal developments. Judge David Chidester of Porter Superior Court nominated Ms. Oddi for providing citizens with an up-to-date capsule of all matters involving Indiana law. Ms. Oddi has published The Indiana Law Blog since 2002.

Marcia’s blog was one of the blogs that drew me to law blogs. A well written blog showcasing a lawyer’s passion and skill. Seemed common sense to me back in ’03 that legal blogs were destined to grow.

I think what I learned most by Marcia’s example was the importance in a legal blog of maintaining standards. So many people when they get a blog, figure, “hey, this is the internet, I can do anything I want,” and proceed to do just that.
There is nothing wrong with that, but to be a “legal blog” and not just a lawyer with a blog, people have to get a tangible benefit from your work.
Marcia has excelled at producing content uninterrupted by this that and the other. All these years of reading her blog, and I do not know if she is married or has kids, or what she does on the weekends. But I do keep on top of Indiana legal developments.
    Regards.
