Be known for what you love. How cool is that.

It’s the tag line you see upon opening Klout, a website and mobile app that uses social media analytics to rank users according to online social influence.

The concept of Klout is that by using social media you get known for what you love. After all, who would use social media for things they’re not passionate about?

Unfortunately, many lawyers.

As is the case with being an entrepreneur starting a business, lawyers need to be driven by passion when beginning to blog and use social media. Otherwise they’re boring and not have the stamina to make it through the tough times.

Author and President of The Energy Project, Tony Schwartz. (@tonyschwartz), authored a piece in the Harvard Business Journal on the six keys to being excellent on anything. Number one was passion.

Pursue what you love. Passion is an incredible motivator. It fuels focus, resilience, and perseverance.

Number one when I talk with lawyers about blogging and social media is passion.

  • Are you blogging about what you really love?
  • By networking online through blogging will you be building relationships with people like interests?
  • Will you be establishing yourself as a go to lawyer in an area which love?
  • If you are not practicing in an area that you are passionate about, what is an area of the law you could be passionate about?
  • How do we get you to the area of law you are passionate about, without burning the boats behind you overnight?

Find your passion. Chase it through blogging and social media as if you have magic wand that makes your dreams come alive.

You may find you’ll get known for what you love — and how cool is that?
