Affluent spend the most time online : Effective Internet presence critical for lawyers

Probably not a surprise that affluent people use the Internet more often and for longer. Those earning over $250,000 spend 60% more time on the Internet than watching television.

Internet usage affluent

Patsi Krakoff turned me onto these survey results by Ipsos Mendelsohn and reported by eMarketer.com.

For lawyers, this increases the need to have an effective Internet presence.

Effective does not just mean ranking at the top of Google. Can these folks pick up on your talent, intellect, and your legal philosophy? Can they see other folks citing what you're saying? Can they see your growing network via LinkedIn and other social media?

For people like me who spend time on the net checking out service providers I'm considering hiring this is the type of info I'm looking for.

And for $250,000 a year for me, my wife wishes it were anywhere close.

Should I start a blog for my law firm or not?

Blog and marketing expert Patsi Krakoff picked up on recent net discussion flowing from the New York Times article on blogs offering consulting businesses big marketing returns by asking 'Which Businesses Are Ideal, Which Are Not.'

Starting the new year, Patsi says businesses ought to ask 'Should I start a blog for my business or not?' And that there's only three answers.

  1. Yes, this makes sense and I'll start this week;
  2. Yes, but not yet; or
  3. No, my business wouldn't lend itself to creative blog content that readers would love.

Which king of business should be answering #1 per Patsi? Here's 5 of the Patsi's top 7, with the first 2 topping her list.

  • Consultants
  • Experts
  • Solo businesses
  • Service businesses
  • Businesses with a need to educate customers

She even adds,

If you're in any kind of business that has an educational component, you should definitely set up a business blog. You'll be able to reach and teach more people than you ever dreamed of.(emphasis added)

Looks like lawyers were built to blog or that blogs were built for lawyers. Your call.
