Sitting back and waiting for the law school placement office to find you a job or relying on a clerking position to springboard you to a $150,000 associate job is little dicey in this economy and the age of law...

Good post. The only good thing about recession is that it forces you to be creative about finding work. Times are always tough to some degree, maybe now more than it has been for a while, but using social media to make connections is a must. Law students that don't embrace web 2.0 communication are really going to get left behind. Sad because it is so simple to pick up.

Paralegals and paralegal students using LinkedIn is one of my blog "soapboxes" and this entry is so well-written that I blogged about it at http://www.practicalparalegalism.com/2009/04/paralegal-students-using-linkedin-its.html. So much of what you write about pertains to all legal professionals that I frequently re-tweet you on Twitter. It's a little like a real-time law office. Sometimes people need to hear it from a lawyer, and not the paralegal!

Kevin, great and timely post, as the class of '09 sets to graduate and take the bar. Regarding "As for the placement office telling you to go slow on the use of social media? You know 'Everything can be used against you, you'll ruin your career.'" As long as one demonstrates good judgment regarding social media, it only helps.

Kevin -

Thanks for the blog post. I've been showing it around to law students who ask me, "Why should I use LinkedIn?" Here's a follow up piece to your post - the "How" once a person has been convinced by the "Why."

"How Law Students Should Use LinkedIn" - my newest blog post on Lawyerist - http://bit.ly/3x23X5. Would you mind passing it along?

Take care
