Blogs preferred to websites for managing your professional identity online

Kirsten Dixson, founder of Brandego, a based Web portfolio service for executives, says blogs may be preferable to websites for managing your professional identity online. This from an article by Patricia Kitchen in Sunday’s Newsday.

Consider starting writing a professional blog first, instead of a Web portfolio, says Kirsten Dixson, founder of Brandego, an Exeter, N.H.-based Web portfolio service for executives. Blogs are interactive and dynamic and seen as more cutting-edge, but you must update them regularly.

Updating a blog highlighting your background and knowledge is not difficult. It’s far easier than doing same on a website where the publishing tools are not has easy and people’s expectations as to the content you are sharing are greater. You’ll also be able to monitor your name and niche via RSS feeds to your feed reader.

The other thing to consider is that if you you a word press blog platform you can create an online portfolio and blog at the same time.
And you can update content easily.
And what’s more that is far more cost effective than the very expensive prices that Kirsten Dizson and her Brandego organisation charge.
Is she having second thoughts about the service she is offering in web portfolios I wonder as they are too expensive for people in job search?
I love what you are doing Kevin – your online brand is very professional.

We have always created Web portfolios and blogs at Brandego, and some of our clients have both. I do believe that a blog is an ideal medium for building one’s personal brand online for many reasons. However, not everyone wants to or should blog, so it’s great to have options.
I agree that WordPress is an excellent, flexible platform too – especially for those who have more technical skills.
At Brandego, our first objective is helping our clients define and articulate their personal brands – the most challenging part of what we do. Then we develop their visual brand identities and consult on relevant content that will support their brand message and increase their visibility and credibility to their target audience. We actually have a range of very individualized services and are not married to any one stock solution for website and overall online identity development. In fact, we’ve supported a number of clients who preferred to build their websites themselves and yet felt that they’d benefit from our objective branding and career-management expertise. That’s the real value of what we do, and we’re not for everyone either. :) After all, anyone can easily get a website – even at zero expense.

Blogs are always a great way to demonstrate your expertise in your field. While general websites serve an important purpose, blogs have an advantage in proving that you know what you’re talking about. Anyone can hire a designer that will create a professional-looking website, but a well-written blog will go much further to prove your expertise.
