Jill's a smart cookie and top notch SEO - this list is a great piece of advice.

On #9 - a good SEO knows that right now DMOZ is broken and submission of sites isn't working - with no date on when its going to be fixed. Its been down for at least 3 weeks right now.

Excellent top 10 list. Wish that every company would read (and understand) a list like this before they start asking for competitive bids! Sure would make life easier for legitimate SEOs.

I'll echo Andrew's thoughts here. Its tough as a legitimate SEO firm b/c so many clients have been soured by low-end firms that promise the world and under-deliver. This is especially true for law firms, where the potential reward of high rankings is so promising.

#10 is especially true. There are only three engines that really matter (in the US at least). To avoid falling victim here I recommend looking for a firm that will talk about "traffic" and "conversions" more than simply rankings. Rankings can be deceiving if they don't produce quality traffic and new business.

I agree to Jon Payne:

If I have to choose an SEO Company, I will go for those, talk about link building, bringing quality traffic, once these things are sorted out, it auto brings you UP in the SERPS.

Very unique, impressive information. By the way how old is the post?
