Thinking about registering a domain? Don't check availability.

Posted at Digg that when users go to some domain name registrars to check on the availability of a domain and don't register it, the registrar will grab the domain. The registrar would then put the name up for sale.

I have always suspected as much. But I am not going to sully the name of any domain registrar by alleging they're one of the companies doing this stuff.

As commented at Digg, if you are not going to buy right away, use Whois.net to check domain availability.
