NY Times reports law blog nets California lawyer huge marketing returns

This morning's New York Times, in an article about making money by blogging Technology > Many Started Web Logs for Fun, but Bloggers Need Money, Too” href=”http://www.nytimes.com/2004/04/19/technology/19blog.html”>reports a California lawyer has generated incredible new business by publishing a blog for the last eight months.

Associate lawyers not allowed to blog?

I have been asked to address the question of whether associate lawyers should be permitted to blog. I need to preface my comments by telling you that this concern makes as much sense to me as whether law firms should permit women lawyers or lawyers of Asian or African descent to blog. But I have… Continue Reading

Leading Internet lawyer > blogs over Web sites

Dennis Kennedy, a great person and well respected Internet lawyer, is joining a number of leading lawyers in saying he would tell lawyers to start a blog before a Web site. Dennis recently posted on his blog his answer to the increasingly-common question of whether to start with a blog or a website: “[M]y current response is definitely a blog and, in most cases, hosted on TypePad. For the reasons Jeff (Jeff Beard of LawTechGuru fame- an excellent blogger himself) mentions and others, starting with a blog and gradually building out standard “website” features makes the most sense if you are in the position where you are asking that question.”
Perhaps the best statement by Dennis is: “I'm still surprised when someone with a law practice tells me that they have neither a website nor a blog.”

Law blog brings public into law office cockpit

Globetechnologyreports Microsoft quietly launched a new site that combines blogs, discussion forums and other technology to improve communications with developers. Channel 9 was created by a group of engineers and “technology evangelists” at Microsoft that is convinced the software giant could do more to promote free discussion with outside developers. The name refers to the audio channel most airlines use to allow passengers to listen in on conversations between flight crew members.
“We think developers need their own channel 9, a way to listen in to the cockpit at Microsoft, an opportunity to learn how we fly, a chance to get to know our pilots,” according to a welcome message posted by the site's creators. “Five of us in Redmond are crazy enough to think we just might learn something from getting to know each other. … Join in, and have a look inside our cockpit and help us fly the plane.”

Ads on lawyer blogs?

Newsobserver.com reports Jeralyn Merritt, a Denver criminal defense lawyer who uses her TalkLeft Web log to promote her liberal views about the criminal justice system has started selling ads on her blog. Jeralyn, who is a fine lawyer who would go out of her way to help people, never considered selling space to advertisers. Then she got a call from Henry Copeland. Since then the Democratic National Committee, presidential candidate John Kerry and congressional candidates have advertised on her blog. In March, the ads generated $1,000 in revenue. “I feel I'm doing good at the same time I am making money,” Merritt said.

Cubs Win! Mariner's opening day.

Cubs win, Astro's lose. We're in first place and Cub's magic number to clinch our division is down to 161 (any combination of Cub's wins and Astro's losses). You can taste the fall classic already. Now we just need to make sure Steve Bartman (ball guy) has seats a few rows off the field for the playoffs.
Our entire family is off to Safeco field in Seattle in a couple hours for opening day. Bleacher Seats – $110; Food & beverage ($8 beers) – $75; M's convincing fans they are playing to win so as to sell out most every game & make millions of dollars when they will not trade for or sign players needed to make playoffs – priceless.
Actually being with family walking through blocks of hot dog & peanut vendors, watching old time baseball videos on the big screen, seeing grass so green it hurts the eyes & jets flying overhead, all along with thousands of ordinary folks taking the day off to watch a game, makes one feel you're in the “Field of Dreams.”
Sorry for the distraction – baseball is in my blood.

Where have I been?

I have not posted recently. I did not fall off the face of the earth nor am I any less excited about what blogs can do for lawyer marketing. It's just the opposite. I have been busy working on the launch of a new company, lexBlog. lexBlog will be a turnkey solution for lawyers wishing to use a more dynamic and effective way to market themselves on the Internet. Read on to learn a little about why I am crazy enough to do this.
